Dr. Yee addressed a common question among patients: how to determine whether a breast augmentation or a breast lift is needed. According to the surgeon, each practitioner may have their own philosophy; however, he explains that an important factor in making this decision is the position of the nipple in relation to the inframammary fold, along with specific measurements of the patient’s chest.

- Oh, that's a difficult question. I tell them that augmentation just gives them volume. A lot of times it's used to restore the upper pole fullness that people lose either with age or with childbirth. - And that's all that breast augmentation does is it gives you volume, mostly in the upper pole. Depends a lot on where your nipple lies as to whether or not you should get a lift. There's a line at the bottom of your breast called the inframammary line that's genetically set that doesn't change. - And if your nipple is usually below that line, there's a high chance you need a lift. If it's above the line, there's a high chance you don't need a lift. If it is at the line, usually there's a 50-50 chance of a lift. - That's usually my philosophy. However, there are different surgeons have different philosophies on that. A lot of it also has to do with the measurements from the notch to the nipple area. - And so preoperative measuring is kind of needed.
